Social Wellbeing

Access to safe sanitation and adequate housing is
a basic human right and is essential for the full enjoyment of life.

Access to basic sanitation and safe housing is a fundamental right that significantly impacts health, dignity, and overall social wellbeing. Still a significant percentage of Kolping Members in India was found to lack adequate sanitation and housing. Members living in huts and dilapidated houses that lack basic facilities are prone to unsafe living conditions. In response to the inhumane, poor living conditions of Kolping members, Kolping India launched Sanitation Assistance Project (SAP) and Housing Support Project (HSP) with the objective to help Kolping members to construct hygienic toilets and affordable houses. Through this project, we aim to empower communities by improving their living standards by providing the necessary support for the Kolping members to build house-hold toilet and affordable house.

Sanitation Assistance Project

Lack of proper sanitation is a grave concern in India. The project aimed at ending the practice of open defecation among Kolping members by educating and motivating them to construct household toilet. Awareness is created through several sensitisation and training programs, enabling families which have traditionally been practicing open defecation to get convinced of the benefits of having toilet at home.

Housing Support Project

Housing is a symbol of family identity, and it is one of the indicators of ‘quality of life’ as defined by UNDP. Kolping India introduced the housing project in 1993 as large number of Kolping members were from poor strata and were deprived of a decent place to live. Still a significant percentage of Kolping Members in India was found to lack adequate housing. Members living in huts and dilapidated houses that lack basic facilities are prone to unsafe living conditions. In response to the inhumane, poor living conditions of Kolping members, Kolping India launched Housing Support Project (HSP) with the objective to help Kolping members to construct affordable houses.
